CROATIA: Dubrovnik

The patron saint of Dubrovnik is Saint Blaise ("Protector of the Throat"), who is always depicted holding a model of the city of Dubrovnik.  At the time of Napoleon, all the nunneries and monasteries were closed down and turned into hospitals and stables.  Three monasteries have been reopened: one Franciscan, one Dominican, and one Jesuit.  Today we saw the monasteries, including the Franciscan Monastery and its pharmacy, which is the third oldest pharmacy in the world that is still in use (founded in 1317).

We drove away from the towns and villages for a lovely lunch at a little restaurant with a river running through the middle of it.  We also were able to sample local wines; one of the reds was probably the best wine I've ever tried...I should have written down what it was, because I can never remember these things.

There's a great bridge by Dubrovnik, too.  I snapped a quick picture as we left the port.
